Curriculum

At St Giles Academy, we want pupils’ experiences of education to be enjoyable and engaging. We expect all members of the academy community, parents, families and staff, to work collaboratively with high aspirations and expectations of everyone, consistent with our values.

Our engaging, broad and balanced curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is enriched with visits and experiences. Not only does the curriculum challenge all children, it intends to provide memorable and meaningful experiences, be well planned, differentiated through creative planning and high quality first teaching. There will be numerous learning experiences with further opportunities through extra-curricular activities.

Teaching encourages pupils to ask questions and talk intelligently about their learning and progress. Throughout their learning journey, pupils will develop a love of reading through an effective balance of synthetic phonics, drama, speaking and listening, guided reading and story-telling. In mathematics, we plan for meaningful activities with firm foundations in mathematical facts, calculation reasoning and problem solving. Our curriculum is strongly aligned with our vision for the children to live happy, safe and successful lives.

Right to Withdraw from Religious Education (RE)

At our school, we believe Religious Education (RE) plays an important role in developing pupils’ understanding of the world, different beliefs, and cultural diversity. Our RE curriculum follows the locally agreed syllabus, which is determined by the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE).

However, the Education Act 1996 grants parents the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education. This right is derived from the parent’s right to ensure that their child receives religious education in accordance with their own conviction.

Key Information for Parents

  • Your Right: You have the legal right to request that your child is completely or partially withdrawn from RE lessons without providing a reason.
  • Requesting Withdrawal: If you wish to withdraw your child, please make an appointment to speak with the Principal. This initial discussion helps us to understand your concerns and any potential arrangements that may be needed.
  • Formal Process: Following the discussion, we ask that you put your request in writing to the Principal.
  • Alternative Provision: When a child is withdrawn from RE, the school has a duty to supervise the child, but is not required to provide alternative educational activities. When your child is withdrawn, they will be supervised by a member of staff in a designated area and may be given activities such as silent reading or other work set by the class teacher.

We respect all parental decisions regarding the education of their children. Should you have any questions about our RE curriculum before making a decision, please do not hesitate to contact the school office to arrange a meeting.
